Halloween in Australia

It’s almost time for Halloween in Australia. Unless you’ve been living in a cave for the last few years, you would have noticed our country’s growing Halloween party trend. You would have also heard many Australians scoff at the event as solely an American tradition that has no relevance Down Under. But is this really the case?

Halloween in Australia

What is Halloween really all about?

Halloween is a celebration observed in a many countries on October 31st. It is dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints and martyrs. Some believe that Halloween originated from ancient Celtic harvest festivals and that it was ‘Christianised’ by the early Church. Others believe that Halloween began solely as a Christian holiday. Either way, it is clear that Halloween did not originate in America, but in Celtic Ireland!

Halloween Activities

Halloween activities include trick-or-treating, attending Halloween costume parties, carving pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns, playing pranks, and telling scary stories. In some parts of the world, the observance of Halloween is formal, with some Christians attending church services and lighting candles on graves. Elsewhere, it is a more commercial and secular celebration.
